The Market NYC

July 20, 2009

Last weekend after a lunch in Chinatown I mistakenly stumbled upon The Market NYC, a bazaar-like collection of stalls with local designers showing off their goods – anything from beautifully crafted jewelry and handmade shoes to funky photographs, feathered headbands and silk screened t-shirts. The clothing was a little avant-garde for “real life” (at least mine)… but the jewelry and other accessories were very wearable. If you are looking for a one-of-a-kind gift that is uniquely New York (but not cheesy) I would highly recommend it. There were even journals and postcards made from old LPs which I thought was a great idea. I first heard about The Market from one of my favorite design blogs: Design*Sponge, which has great neighborhood guides to shopping, eating and design for all the New York neighborhoods and beyond (Atlanta, London etc.). Yelp also has a good review page of it, link here.

I bought a pyrite ring with an unusual wire-like setting but it was so hard to choose from all the beautiful things for sale. Just make sure you bring cash and maybe a list for your Christmas shopping…
