The Queens Furniture Market

August 16, 2009

QueensIntrigued by the description of the Queens Furniture Market on one of my favorite blogs, Design*Sponge, I ventured out to Astoria this past weekend with two friends to go see if this place was worth its reputation. Design*Sponge described it as the furniture and knick knack source for Gossip Girl, 30 Rock and other TV show sets so it seemed like a good place to go hunting. Unfortunately, unless you want endless porcelain plates or cups and saucers, funky dressers or ’70s orange chenille couches this isn’t the best place to go. On the bright side, they did have some really nice mirrors that could be repainted as well as some nice ladder back chairs for the kitchen. The women working there told us prices were negotiable, “Sometimes as much as half off!”, and I think it’s worth a visit for chairs or mirrors. But don’t get your hopes up! I think Design*Sponge was a little too positive in their review.

The market is located at:

22-08 Astoria Boulevard

Astoria, NY 11102

No matter where you are, or where you are traveling to, Design*Sponge has a wonderful guide (written by a local designer) to shops and restaurants, accessible here. Although the trip to the Queens Furniture Market was a bit of a flop I wouldn’t mind giving the guide another try. They even have a guide for Boise, Idaho and more well known destinations like Sydney, Milan, Zurich etc. The guide for Beijing is very well done, with a few of the places I would recommend myself so I’m assuming the guides for other cities are similarly well composed.
