Custom candies at Papabubble, NYC.

Wandering around SoHo today resulted in a happy surprise, a childhood dream in a tiny unassuming shop on Broome Street called Papabubble, the caramel artisans. In front of my eyes, a batch of grapefruit flavored candy was kneaded on a hot surface, spread with the shop’s secret fizzy powder, folded onto itself over and over and rolled into a neat tube which was then fed into a tiny machine that cut it into chains of perfectly shaped candies that were still warm when you put them in  your mouth. The assortment was mind-boggling with passionfruit flavored fizzy candies, lollipops straight from Wonka’s factory, tiny candies with little cat and pig faces baked into them like murano glass and even rings! I couldn’t even take my eyes off of the skilled “candy chefs” performing their magic. Custom candies with names, well wishes, anything you want are available too and seem like they would make a great gift!

Papabubble is at 380 Broome St. between Mott and Mulberry and is open Tuesdays-Saturdays 12pm-9pm and Sundays 12pm to 6pm. Their website can give you a taste of their skill and imagination here.
